Precision farming

Precision farming is a form of agriculture that uses modern techniques such as sensors, drones and satellite images to provide customized treatment for the crop. This method is often used for chemicals, fertilizers, weeds and soil analysis. The goal of precision farming is to apply as few products and processes as possible locally. For example, this means that a precision fertilizer spreader spreads more where the crop is not growing well. Precision farming techniques ensure that the crops only get what they need. This reduction results in a decrease in fertilizer and chemical use while yields remain high due to optimal use of these. The disadvantage of precision farming is the high costs of the techniques associated with it. However, these costs can quickly pay off if yields increase, if less labor is needed and if less fuel and emissions are emitted.

Precision Planting is a company specialized in analyzing data through sensors and turning it into usable information for farmers. Optimal planting depth

Horizon has developed, in collaboration with Precision Planting, a precision planter. The PPX Planter has been designed to perfectly place seed into the optimal growing environment, even in the most challenging environments. High volumes of crop residue, hard no-till stubbles or uneven and lumpy strip till seedbeds are just some of the challenges the PPX can comfortably handle. The PPX won’t only perform in these challenging scenarios, it will also capture live data and make automated adjustments to ensure the optimal growing environment is achieved for every seed. This means that every seed is placed in contact with moist soil during the planting process. They also offer several in-furrow fertilizing options and an in-furrow insecticide applicator.

Reducing chemicals through spay technology

Herbicides also give crops a hard time and even though the crops grow through the damage, they can still effect the yield during harvest time. Weeds are a competition for the crops because they use also nutrients, if weeds are not removed properly, the crops may have a yield loss. Though weeds seem an enemy for the average farmer, they can also give an indication of problems in the soil. Some weeds grow best on compacted or acidic soil, for example. An efficient way to remove weeds without damaging the crops can be to mechanically remove them, or to use spot spraying techniques combined with precision farming.
